<text>Each stage of the body's immune response relies on the presence of nutrients. The energy and nutrient needs of the immune system can be met from exogenous diets. Dietary components can influence the development and maintenance of the immune system or play a very specific role in reducing chronic inflammation. The healthy diet regulates the fine balance of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators and immune cells to help the immune system fight infection. They can also protect our bodies from harmful autoimmune diseases, chronic inflammatory diseases or cancer, and fetal infection following cancer or before harmful autoimmune diseases. In contrast, malnutrition or excessive intake of micronutrients can impair immune function. For example, iron supplementation will increase morbidity and mortality in those in malaria-endemic regions. Researchers have always had many questions about nutrition and the immune system: How can different dietary components effectively treat immune deficiencies associated with inadequate intake? Can specific nutritional interventions further enhance immune function in subclinical settings to prevent inflammatory disease infection or chronic disease? The authors of papers included in this Special Issue shared some valuable knowledge, including but not limited to research on different dietary components related to the immune system. Ultimately, we hope that this reprint will be useful for clinical practitioners and inspire further innovative research.</text>

<text>This Special Issue on “Application of Fermentation Technology in Animal Nutrition” comprises 11 original research articles and 1 communication. Collectively, these contributions illustrate the promising future of fermentation technology in animal nutrition research, one that is committed to both tradition and innovation, with the objective of advancing the frontiers of fermentation science. Altogether, this Special Issue presents several original studies in the field of animal nutrition, including research on co-ensiling technology, silage additives, rumen fermentation, and related topics. These findings could help to improve feed resources, optimize silage quality and improve animal performance. As this Special Issue draws to a close, it is obvious that the field of silage research is not merely evolving, but undergoing a revolution. The challenges that lie ahead are considerable, but so are the opportunities. By addressing these challenges and pursuing the research directions outlined above, it is possible to ensure that fermentation technology will remain a critical aspect of animal nutrition, meeting the evolving needs of animal husbandry.</text>

<text>Proteins are fascinating structures that operate at the nanoscale in a complex environment and are involved in an astonishingly wide variety of functions, from ion transport to enzymatic catalysis, metabolism, neurotransmission, and many more functions. Understanding these peculiar functionalities at the single-protein level requires advanced experimental and computational techniques. In the era of high-performance computing, computational methods are particularly well suited to investigating the structure and dynamics of proteins and unravelling how they enable biological functions. Molecular Dynamics (MD), Normal Mode Analysis (NMA), and Elastic Network Models (ENMs) are just a few examples of the computational methodologies that we can use to elucidate protein conformational dynamics, allostery, the impact of mutations, and many other fascinating subjects. This Special Issue comprises eight peer-reviewed papers demonstrating how various computational approaches can be employed to address the ultimate and most crucial question: how do proteins work?</text>

<text>This open-access textbook is an excellent introduction to systems biology, which has developed rapidly in recent years. It discusses the processes in living organisms in an integrated way, enabling the reader to understand the fundamental principles and cause-effect relationships in biology and biochemistry. The authors have chosen an original but at the same time clear way of presenting the topics, repeatedly drawing comparisons and models from the macroscopic world and making the reader aware of the unity of the laws of physics, chemistry and biology. The fully updated 2nd edition also contains information that has only become available as a result of the increase in knowledge in recent years. This includes information on tumorigenesis, where significant progress has been made due to the explosive development of genetic knowledge as well as bioengineering with a highly effective technique adopted from the solutions of the bacterial world, such as CRISPR/CAS. This richly illustrated book is essential for postgraduate students and scientists of the following disciplines: biology, biotechnology, medicine, bioinformatics, robotics and automation, biocybernetics, and biomedical engineering. It is also an exciting read for anyone interested in biology.</text>

<text>This book presents hard facts, drawn from extensive research, to highlight our unsustainable consumption of the Earth’s resources and the limitations of the UK’s current management of waste and recycling. Setting out a bleak picture of a world in which we are literally consuming our planet, the book explores the psychological, economic and capitalist drivers behind this behaviour. Controversially, the book examines the drawbacks of the current approach adopted by many local authorities on the kerbside collection of recyclable materials, as well as the UK governments’ strategic approaches to household recycling, including the lack of UK- wide infrastructures for packaging reuse, and for product repair and recycling. It challenges the whole concept of waste, leading to a proposed new strategy for the management of household waste, including a simplified household collection system, the introduction of an incineration tax and the banning of all household waste exports. The author proposes reconceptualising waste as unwanted but valuable material and argues that the responsibility for facilitating reuse, repair and recycling, rests with manufacturers who must start designing with the end in mind. Given the current economic climate, and a dampening of the green agenda within UK politics, the book provides a much- needed call for critical discourse on how, and how much, we consume and sets out clear, practical solutions for change. The book will be of interest to manufacturers, retailers, consumers, local authorities, policy makers, students and professionals looking to reduce our impact on the environment.</text>

<text>Reproduction and genetics are the central themes of biology. They relate to big questions of life such as: who are we, where do we come from, and where are we going? In the combined science of reproductive genetics, generations are interconnected and fertility plays a significant role. The cell lineage responsible for this is known as the germline, with gametes as the functional products and heralds of information. The book follows the germline and attempts, through a more liberal and narrative use of language, to bridge the gap between an academic textbook and society. Personal experiences are not shunned but do not dominate. The book is intended for those professionally involved in or entering this field, including those in education and journalism. However, it is also suitable for enthusiasts without a professional background, partly thanks to its beautiful colour illustrations and an up-to-date glossary.</text>

<text>This book is an introduction to the language of systems biology, which is spoken among many disciplines, from biology to engineering. Authors Thomas Sauter and Marco Albrecht draw on a multidisciplinary background and evidence-based learning to facilitate the understanding of biochemical networks, metabolic modeling and system dynamics. Their pedagogic approach briefly highlights core ideas of concepts in a broader interdisciplinary framework to guide a more effective deep dive thereafter. The learning journey starts with the purity of mathematical concepts, reveals its power to connect biological entities in structure and time, and finally introduces physics concepts to tightly align abstraction with reality. This workbook is all about self-paced learning, supports the flipped-classroom concept, and kick-starts with scientific evidence on studying. Each chapter comes with links to external YouTube videos, learning checklists, and Integrated real-world examples to gain confidence in thinking across scientific perspectives. The result is an integrated approach that opens a line of communication between theory and application, enabling readers to actively learn as they read. This overview of capturing and analyzing the behavior of biological systems will interest adherers of systems biology and network analysis, as well as related fields such as bioinformatics, biology, cybernetics, and data science.</text>

<text>This Open Access book covers the concept of umami, the unique taste imparted by the amino acid glutamate, was first described in 1908 by Dr. Kikunae Ikeda of Tokyo University. Over the past century, hundreds of studies have explored the mechanistic underpinnings of the taste, leading to the characterization of the umami taste receptor in 2002. How this fifth basic taste figures into nutrition and health, however, remains underexplored. Umami: Taste for Health provides an overview of the relationship between umami and human health. Authors explain how glutamate not only produces a characteristic oral sensation in the mouth but also functions as a signaling molecule to induce physiological responses. With the support of recent studies, the book demonstrates how the taste properties of umami make glutamate a promising substance to lower salt intake, promote satiation and support healthier aging. The text also covers practical culinary applications to increase umami flavor and practical usage of umami for promoting healthy eating. Provides an overview of the relationship between umami and human health; Explores the potential of glutamate to lower salt intake, promote satiation and support healthier aging; Covers practical culinary applications of umami flavor and practical usage of umami for promoting healthy eating.</text>
