Meskipun selalu penting, memahami sains secara ketat sangat penting terutama ketika berhadapan dengan pengelolaan ekosistem yang kompleks karena 'normatif' dibuat secara bertahap sebelum hukum mulai memeriksa 'fakta' dari masalah tersebut. Setelah meneliti akar manajemen adaptif, buku ini berpendapat bahwa hukum perlu memahami dirinya sendiri sebagai bagian integral dari proses manajemen sosio-ekologis sistem yang kompleks dan bukan sekadar wasit eksternal yang menyelesaikan perselisihan.
