<text>The implementation of laparoscopy has revolutionized surgery over the past few years, incorporating significant benefits for the patient. However, this evolution has also entailed many technical obstacles for surgeons. This book is for readers wanting to learn more about recent surgical techniques and technologies. Topics cover novel sophisticated approaches for single-site surgery, natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery, and transanal surgery, among others. Also included are reviews of new innovative surgical devices, robotic platforms, and methodological guidelines for improving surgical performance and surgeon ergonomics.

<text>Women and men have probably never been concerned as much by their health as during this COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, lifestyle habits continue to be promoted as allies for daily prevention against diseases. This is valid also for metabolic diseases, among which many affect the liver and are risk factors for aggravating the disease course of COVID-19. In fact, liver diseases are currently a major global health problem. There is a huge range of liver diseases and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic hepatic condition, which in some patients progresses to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Currently, substantial efforts are being made to better understand NAFLD, especially, because there is no U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved pharmacological therapy. To explore this disease, metabolomics is the most recently developed omics technology after genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. Metabolomics is the large-scale analysis of molecules, known as metabolites that are intermediate or end products of metabolism found within cells, tissues, and biofluids. This technology has a very high potential to identify biomarker candidates for the future development of new therapeutics. The book features articles that address metabolomics technology and its use to document different liver functions and dysfunctions, with a major focus on NAFLD.

<text>"Available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. Bringing together a range of experts across various sectors, this important volume explores some of the key issues that have arisen in the Global South with the COVID-19 pandemic. Situating the worldwide health crisis within broader processes of globalisation, the book investigates implications for development and gender, as well as the effects on migration, climate change and economic inequality. Contributors consider how widespread and long-lasting responses to the pandemic should be, while paying particular attention to the accentuated risks faced by vulnerable populations. Providing answers that will be essential to development practitioners and policy makers, the book offers vital insights into how the impact of COVID-19 can be mitigated in some of the most challenging socio-economic contexts worldwide. <text>This Open Access book examines many of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic through the distinctive lens of civility. The idea of civility appears often in both public and academic debates, and a polarized political climate frequently leads to allegations of uncivil speech and behaviour. Norms of civility are always contested, even more so in moments of crisis such as a global pandemic. A focus on civility provides crucial insight and guidance on how to navigate the social and political challenges resulting from COVID-19. Furthermore, it offers a framework through which citizens and policymakers can better understand the causes and consequences of incivility, and devise ways to recover civility in our social and political lives.

<text>This book discusses the emerging challenges of the filovirus infections Ebola and Marburg virus disease. It reviews the complex ecology and role played by bats and other suspected intermediate hosts, including pigs. Also examined are the challenges for other modes of transmission and early diagnosis and detection. The immunology and pathogenesis of the infections and the impact on the host?s immune systems are discussed. The rare occurrence of Marburg virus infection in pregnancy and the long-term consequences of sexual transmission by survivors is further examined. These discussions have the potential to support future management of outbreaks and guide research for vaccines and medication for Ebola and Marburg disease.
