<text>This study investigates eighteenth-century medical writing, particularly concerning the elaboration and the communication of medicine in such reference works as universal dictionaries of arts and sciences, medical dictionaries, and handbooks. Most of the vernacular texts under scrutiny here were issued in the second half of the century, a period in which the advancements in medical research, medical education and medical practice favoured the circulation of an expanding medical vocabulary and stimulated medical writing as a whole. A vast amount of reference works was produced for experts and non-experts alike: medical topics were common in social settings, in personal and communal letters, in specialised journals, in pamphlets and in magazines. All this unprecedented activity certainly contributed to the vernacularisation, and the dissemination of medicine in different kinds of works and different text types. The texts examined in the study are representative of their authors’ effort to expand medical knowledge and to define medicine as an independent science based on strict observation, as well as to establish intelligibility within and outside the disciplinary discourse community.</text>

<text>Documenting Maritime Heritage at Risk addresses the risks posed to coastal piers and quays due to climate change, the urgent need for documentation and attendant questions regarding long-term conservation, and the role communities could have in this endeavour.

Case studies from communities, researchers, and national agencies offer insights into the documentation and analysis of coastal heritage, guidance on survey methodologies, and the potential of digital tools. Communities living along the coast, who are deeply attached to their heritage, are facing these threats very directly – and often with a sense of having little agency in the discussions or decisions being taken. Yet, as the book demonstrates, they could have a central role to play as first-hand observers of the impact of climate change on their heritage. The collection offers an overview of the invaluable role of different participants, working collectively in the documentation and management of endangered maritime heritage.

Documenting Maritime Heritage at Risk provides a vital resource for researchers and students engaged in the study of maritime heritage. It will also be of great interest to practitioners, such as local heritage or conservation officers and marine engineers who bear the primary responsibility for recording and maintaining maritime heritage.</text>

Photography was taken to a high aesthetic peak in the heroic age
expeditions of Scott and Shackleton. Herbert Ponting, who travelled with Scott, called himself a ‘photographic artist’. Frank Hurley, who was an innovator in the use of a camera, against all odds produced unforgettable images of the crushing and sinking of Shackleton’s Endurance in the ice of the Weddell Sea. He later sailed with Mawson, taking not only still photographs of onboard activities and equipment for dredging, but also film sequences, some of which were widely shown to boost funding for further expeditions. The images of both Ponting and Hurley have come to symbolise Antarctica in the minds of a curious public.</text>

<text>Living with an infected planet has led to an unprecedented crisis of care. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, life-making and death-making are at the center of global attention. Pandemic terms include COVID-19 response, frontline work, genocidal pandemic, lockdown, mask mandate, shadow pandemic, social distancing, vaccine wars, or virus racism. Elke Krasny presents a feminist mapping of key terms and key images defining the ›pandemicscape‹, looking at a wide range of sources including media coverage, policy by the WHO, the UN or the IMF, recommendations by NGOs and feminist organizations, but also ways of seeing care in photography and painting. Arguing against going back to normal, she outlines a new global international care order.</text>

<text>Introduces key ideas and offers a sense of the new frontiers and questions in the emerging field of disability media studies Disability Media Studies articulates the formation of a new field of study, based in the rich traditions of media, cultural, and disability studies. Necessarily interdisciplinary and diverse, this collection weaves together work from scholars from a variety of disciplinary homes, into a broader conversation about exploring media artifacts in relation to disability. The book provides a comprehensive overview for anyone interested in the study of disability and media today. Case studies include familiar contemporary examples—such as Iron Man 3, Lady Gaga, and Oscar Pistorius—as well as historical media, independent disability media, reality television, and media technologies. The contributors consider disability representation, the role of media in forming cultural assumptions about ability, the construction of disability via media technologies, and how disabled audiences respond to particular media artifacts. The volume concludes with afterwords from two different perspectives on the field—one by disability scholar Rachel Adams, the other by media scholars Mara Mills and Jonathan Sterne—that reflect upon the collection, the ongoing conversations, and the future of disability media studies. Disability Media Studies is a crucial text for those interested in this flourishing field, and will pave the way for a greater understanding of disability media studies and its critical concepts and conversations.

The authors work with a wide range of old and new media types that are traditionally investigated through limited, media-specific concepts. The publication is a significant contribution to interdisciplinary research, advancing the frontiers of conceptual as well as practical understanding of media interrelations. <text>Urban Informality and the Built Environment demonstrates the value of greater and more diverse forms of engagement of built environment disciplines in what constitutes urban informality and its politics. It brings a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of informality and the built environment in diverse contexts, drawing on recent research by architects, planners, political scientists, geographers and urban theorists. The book presents different case studies from multiple geographies, drawing attention to the need for studying urban informality in the Global North and Global South. The cases promote a cross-fertilization between disciplines, lenses, geographies and methodologies. They range from the creative place-making of street artists in Accra, to the morphological evolution of urban Tirana, urban agriculture in la Habana and social reproduction in Greece. Additional contributions highlight the cross-cutting themes of infrastructure, exchange and image. Urban Informality and the Built Environment introduces built environment disciplines to its constitutive roles in producing urban informality. It also tests a range of new methodologies to the study of urban informality, demonstrating the possibilities for new insights when building on the relational understanding of urban informality.</text>

To gain a three-dimensional image of a patient's face and profile to visualize changes in appearance after applying a specific therapeutic method in the field of prosthodontics or orthodontics is no longer a problem. The same applies to a very accurate scan of the area to be treated - the exact map of the working field, on the basis of which the implementation of even very difficult dental procedures can be easily planned. Equally available are three-dimensional images of the patient's skull. The book presents the newest means and capabilities of visualization in different fields of dentistry.</text>
