Decreased reporting of notifiable infectious diseases and conditions during the pandemic remained a major concern for health authorities. Ascertaining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the transmission patterns of other infectious diseases holds significant implications for public health, but this topic has not yet been studied to a greater extent. On the other hand, the scope and relevance of clinical microbiology are appreciated more than ever. Viral structure, transmission, diagnosis, and optimal sterilization and disinfection process were the key elements that clinical microbiologists shared for the betterment of the community throughout the pandemic. The applicability of mucoadhesion in the drug delivery has been first demonstrated in 1947 but received wide recognition only in the early 1980 th. Currently there are several routes of administration established for transmucosal drug delivery, where mucoadhesive materials increasingly find some applications. These include ocular, nasal, oromucosal, gastrointestinal, esophageal, vaginal, rectal and intravesical drug delivery. Each route will have some specific physiological features that will determine the possibility of drug administration and the design of suitable dosage forms. Mucoadhesive dosage forms have been formulated as tablets, lozenges, wafers, pessaries, films, gels, liquid and semi-solid systems as well as suspensions of various nano- and microparticles. Hydrophilic polymers have been shown to exhibit mucoadhesive properties due to specific interactions with mucins as well as because of their ability to form viscous solutions and penetration into mucus gel. There is currently a continuously increased interest in the design of novel mucoadhesive materials and dosage forms. These dosage forms could be formulated using conventional hydrophilic polymers, their combinations and complexes. Additionally there is currently a strong interest of researchers in chemical modification of existing polymers to enhance their mucoadhesive properties. This book represents a collection of reviews and original research papers, focusing on mucoadhesive polymers and formulations for transmucosal drug delivery. Seaweeds play a major role in blue carbon, which fixes carbon to the ocean by taking in carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and producing polysaccharides. In addition to environmental problems, marine polysaccharides have various modifying groups and have been found to have different functionality from land plants. Marine polysaccharides have been used in foods and medicines. Recently, novel biocatalysis of polysaccharide-relating enzymes has been discovered. As a result, the functionality of oligosaccharides from marine polysaccharides has been clarified, e.g., health functionality such as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory effect, intestinal regulation and antioxidant activity. This Special Issue aims to accumulate the knowledge of preparation, function, structure, and application of bioactive oligosaccharides and polysaccharides-relating enzymes from marine organisms. This Special Issue aimed to contribute to the achievement of multiple goals of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (No. 2, 3, 12, 14), and we invited scientists to submit their latest research findings in this field. Comprehensive review papers are also welcomed.
