<text>Judge Your Practices Against This Benchmark Manual COST Action B-24 established four working groups to research and discuss issues relevant to laboratory animal science. These included the housing of animals, environmental needs, refinement of procedures, genetically modified animals, and cost-benefit analysis. Based on the groups’ findings, The COST Manual of Laboratory Animal Care and Use: Refinement, Reduction, and Research provides a consensual European view of best practices for individuals and institutions caring for and working with laboratory animals. What is COST? COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is an intergovernmental initiative that promotes coordination of nationally funded science and research at a European level. This book focuses on reduction and refinement strategies and includes insightful contributions from 44 experts drawn from various EU countries. Addressing only the most commonly used mammalian species—rats, mice, and rabbits—each chapter of the book follows a similar structure: Objectives outline the breadth of the chapter’s coverage Key Factors summarize the central issues that underpin good practice Questions Unresolved close each chapter, identifying areas of uncertainty and prompting investigations directed at advancing knowledge and application within relevant fields The COST Manual of Laboratory Animal Care and Use: Refinement, Reduction, and Research is the reference sure to be found in the lab coats of those responsible for the care and welfare of animals and those overseeing and conducting activities related to the use of animals for scientific purposes.</text>

<text>The current understanding of the complex role of ROS in the organism, and pathological sequelae of oxidative stress, points to the necessity of comprehensive studies of antioxidant reactivities and interactions with cellular constituents. Many of the protective actions of natural antioxidants in health and diseases have been ascribed to their antioxidant properties, but in recent years, many studies have suggested that their classic hydrogen-donating antioxidant activity is unlikely to be the sole explanation for their effects. First of all, natural antioxidants are broadly metabolized in vivo, resulting in significant modifications. Moreover, the concentrations of natural antioxidants and their metabolites in vivo are lower than those usually utilized in vitro. Consequently, natural antioxidants do not exert their biological action in vivo viasimply reacting with ROS. Accumulating evidence suggests that the cellular effects of natural antioxidants may be mediated by their interactions with specific proteins that are central to intra cellular signaling cascades, modulating the expression and activity of key proteins, influencing epigenetic mechanisms, or modulating gut microbiota.</text>

<text>This open access book is based on selected presentations from Topic Study Group 21: Mathematical Applications and Modelling in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics at the 13th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME 13), held in Hamburg, Germany on July 24–31, 2016. It contributes to the theory, research and teaching practice concerning this key topic by taking into account the importance of relations between mathematics and the real world. Further, the book addresses the “balancing act” between developing students’ modelling skills on the one hand, and using modelling to help them learn mathematics on the other, which arises from the integration of modelling into classrooms. The contributions, prepared by authors from 9 countries, reflect the spectrum of international debates on the topic, and the examples presented span schooling from years 1 to 12, teacher education, and teaching modelling at the tertiary level. In addition the book highlights professional learning and development for in-service teachers, particularly in systems where the introduction of modelling into curricula means reassessing how mathematics is taught. Given its scope, the book will appeal to researchers and teacher educators in mathematics education, as well as pre-service teachers and school and university educators</text>

<text>Canadian Pharmaceutical Scientists have a rich history of groundbreaking research in pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism undertaken primarily throughout its Pharmacy Faculties and within the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology industry. The principles of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) is the foundational basis of rationale drug-design, and principled pharmacotherapy. The study of ADME and its descriptive quantitative analysis is the basis of pharmacokinetics. Pharmacokinetics is fundamental in the development of a new chemical entity into a marketable product and is essential in understanding the bioavailability, bioequivalence, and biosimilarities of drugs. Pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism and development studies facilitate an understanding of organ-based functionality. Population pharmacokinetic variability and the modeling of drug concentrations has significant utility in translating individual response in a target patient population underlying advances in precision health. </text>

<text>Electrospinning is one of the most widely used techniques for the fabrication of nano/microparticles and nano/microfibers, induced by a high voltage applied to the drug-loaded solution. The modification of environmental conditions, solution properties or operation parameters results in different fiber properties, thus enabling the fine-tuning of functionality-related characteristics of the final product. The latter includes the alteration of the rate and extent of the solubility of drugs, hence the rapid or prolonged onset of absorption. This Special Issue serves to highlight and capture the contemporary progress of electrospinning techniques, with particular attention to their further pharmaceutical application as conventional and novel drug delivery systems or for tissue regeneration purposes. It comprises a series of 12 research articles and one review, illustrating the versatile researches and teams from 13 different countries, making profound contributions to the field.</text>

<text>In this paper we present mathematical approaches to understand a symmetry break and formation of spatially heterogenous structures during development. We focus on the models given by reaction-diffusion equations and approach the question of possible mechanisms of development of spatially heterogeneous structures. We discuss two mechanisms of pattern formation: diffusion-driven instability (Turing instability) and a hysteresis-driven mechanism, and demonstrate their possibilities and constraints in explaining different aspects of structure formation in cell systems. Depending on the type of nonlinearities, we show the existence of Turing patterns, the maxima of which may be of the spike or plateau type, and the existence of transition layer stationary solutions. These concepts are discussed on example of morphogenesis of the fresh water polyp Hydra, which is a model organism in developmental biology.</text>
